Read Mark 10:35-45

What is the best seat you’ve ever had at a sporting event or concert?  I mentioned a few of mine on Sunday morning… probably my favorite was the concert when I was in the front row.  Another part of the story that I didn’t share- the musician we went to see actually fell into the crowd during the concert.  Our seats were off to the side… so we didn’t “have to catch him”.

There are times when we want the best seat… the front seat… the seat where we will be served first.  However, Jesus, who is our example, made it pretty clear that if we were going to follow in His footsteps, we need to take a seat in the back.

In today’s passage, James and John are asking Jesus if they can sit on His right and left hand when He rules.  Jesus says they are not His to give… then reminds them that He came TO serve… not to be served.

When you go to church, are you there to serve-or be served?  When you are at home and your spouse asks you to do something-are you there to serve or be served?  At your job, when your boss asks you to do something-are you there to serve or be served?  If Jesus is our example… the answer is easy.
